In simple terms, it is a sponsored program established by airlines to train First Officers or future Captains.
With the recent improvement in the pandemic situation and economic recovery, more flights are being introduced into the market. Anticipating an upcoming pilot shortage, an increasing number of airlines are investing more resources in “Cadet Pilot Training Programs.” These programs provide more opportunities for individuals, like myself, who have never flown before and do not have an aviation background, to pursue their dream of becoming a pilot.
In Hong Kong, currently only Cathay Pacific Airways offers this program. Upon joining the Cathay Pacific Cadet Pilot Training Program, participants undergo a sponsored 55-week training to become pilots for regional, long-haul, and ultra-long-haul flights. The training includes flight theory, systems, regulations, and flight learning, such as:
– Flying single-engine and twin-engine light aircraft (DA40 and DA42)
– Practicing on jet aircraft simulators and learning airline operating procedures, handling large jet aircraft, and multi-crew operations.
Application requirements:
1. Permanent resident of Hong Kong
2. High school graduate with good grades in English, Mathematics, or Science
3. Physically fit and obtained the Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) Class 1 Medical Certificate
4. Able to meet our cockpit reach requirements
5. Achieved ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) English Language Proficiency Level 4 or above
6. 18 years of age or above
In June 2023, I attempted my first application. The application process consisted of the following steps:
1. ICAO | English Language Proficiency Test
2. CUT-E | Aptitude tests
3. Interview (HR)
4. Interview (Technical Interview)
5. Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) Class 1 Medical Examination
