What is a pilot aptitude test?

A pilot aptitude test evaluates a range of unique skills to ensure one becomes a safe and efficient pilot. These skills include long-term memory, recall ability, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, reaction time, data analysis, and pattern recognition. Flight schools primarily use these tests as tools for pilot recruitment preparation.

Major airlines may have their own aptitude tests, but the main ones used include Cut-E, PILAPT, Compass, and Talent Q. The test content includes numerical, verbal, and mechanical reasoning questions, as well as personality assessments and psychomotor evaluations.

Why are pilot aptitude tests so challenging?

Pilot aptitude tests, like other psychological tests, are designed to provide challenges. The questions are designed as puzzles to be solved rather than traditional “exams” to test the candidates.

In addition to the difficulty of the questions themselves, the time limit means candidates must perform under tremendous pressure, which is also a crucial skill for pilots.

One reason why pilot aptitude tests are so challenging is that they actually determine whether a candidate is suitable for flight training.

How should one study/prepare?

We jokingly refer to Cut-E as “gaming” because the test content is quite similar to playing video games. It involves mini-games that assess the candidate’s calculation abilities, reaction time, spatial awareness, and more.

It is recommended to study using the website pilotassessments.com, which includes “mini-games” similar to the exam.

The next article will share the HR/Tech interview process, how to prepare, and my experience of failing the exam on my first attempt.
